Song Pitch Feedback
Pressure This first song is by Tensnake. Its duration is 2 minutes 54 seconds. The feedback we got from this song was very positive. Everyone enjoyed listening to the song when we played it. Everyone started to dance and move with the beat. We were singing alone as we knew the words. The class said the song was different to any other groups choice. Also it as different compared to other music videos we had already seen. The group said it should be colourful and happy. A lot of dancing about. Our teacher said we should look at 70s videos and maybe base our idea around this. Maybe involve us in suits and older style clothing and props. Not edgy though.
Limits Lie
This song is by Jamie T. It duration is 4 minutes and 11 seconds. Everyone again liked this song choice and thought we could make a good video out of it. The song is a lot slower and less happy than pressure. Secondly people said it would of got boring later on in the video as the tempo stays the same throughout the video. People still said the song would of matched our actor by doing many close ups of lip syncing. This would of looked good. However everyone still had the first song in mind while listening to this one as it is catchy and happy an they enjoyed it more. This song would of been a bit more edgy. More ideas where darker shots with close ups. Also a story being told and cut to in-between the shots of the artist lip syncing. At this stage people where certain we was going to do pressure as the majority preferred that
He is the same
This song is by John Bellion. The duration of the song is 4 minutes and 1 second. The artist is America therefore you can tell this in the lip syncing and the locations we would shoot wouldn't look like was in America and would look very English. Also the lip syncing may of not matched. This song is up beat again and the feedback we got was positive again. Everyone liked each of our choices. This was different again to the other two we had decided. The ideas put forward was a sound board being played with in time with the beats a the start having a dark room with the sound board lighting up and then a silhouette of a hand moving about the board. Also it sounded quite futuristic. Also a split screen when the artists voice is being used for more than one of the sounds. Finally it has swearing involved which the teacher didn't agree with. However we had to decide in the end and everyone was still telling us to do pressure.

Website Research
This emaze contains website feedback. We looked at Artists with a similar genre to our own such as Coldplay, Walk The Moon and One Direction.
Group Song Choices
Below is the powerpoint we presented to our classmates to show the three songs we were thinking about choosing to create a music video for. They all liked 'Pressure' by Tensnake.

Music Lyrics Visuals
In this lesson we used our imaginations when listening to a song. We had to close our eyes and imagine what visuals would match the song thinking about the type of music it was and the lyrics that are in the song.
When i listened to the song i clocked that the genre leaned towards country which sparked alot of ideas in my head. I imagined a band playing in a town hall on a stage, I could see someone using an egg shaker in the beginning, with a few people watching and as the song progresses people get up and start dancing. I also thought that diegetic laughing and talking could be added in the background while this part happened. When the electric guitar with distortion comes in i imagine the band playing on a bigger stage with lots of people watching, possibly on the top of a hill in like a festival environment.
In the first verse the lyrics are about a person, this person could possibly have a narrative for the rest of the video. I imagined this person "Climbing up Solsbury Hill" on an evening and and looking out at all of the lights across the town. Another part to this narrative played on the lyrics "Come on son, i'll take you home" where i imagined a shot of a father and son in a car going through country lanes with lots of fields around them heading home.

Cross Media Synergy
In this lesson we looked at cross media synergy. Cross media synergy is the way that an artist is presented across all of there media platforms. For example Walk The Moon use the same image as the for there album cover as on there website. They also use the same font and colour scheme throughout the website, the album cover and the back of the album.

Student Film Evaluations
Here are a couple of student music videos which i thought were successful.
Do My Thing
This music video is great from an editing perspective. There are hundreds of cuts, different cut screens and different frame sizes to add variety. The performance is also very good from both girls. The dancing is also very good and the lip-sinking is pretty much perfect. My favorite part of the video is where there is a four way split screen during a music interlude and each square changes to a shot of the second girl.
He Wasn't There
This is my favourite video out of the ones which i have seen. The performance from the girl is really stylish and likeable. The video appears as one continuous shot which is really creative but you can see that all of the editing effort was exchanged for Mise En Scene. The props are all extremely detailed and play a great part in setting the tone for the video. I also like how the girl changes outfits quickly to show the time passing. The lip syncing is also great.

Evaluation of Prelim Task
1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Nathan, Joe and Rory. The team worked well as a collective we all acted and all completed the tasks together. Nathan took most of the responsibility with the filming, this was because of his keen interest in photography. I took the responsibility of editing the task, while the Joe and Rory spent the rest of the time completing the written work including the production diary and the location scout.
2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
We planned our sequence by firstly watching the video and then creating a story board of each shot we had to make. We broke these shots down into our shooting schedule deciding on what shots to do on each days. The factors we had to consider while completing this was the availability of these locations, for example we used the school's minibus for one of the shots but it was only available to us on one of the days. Once we had the footage the editing process began which i took a lead in. We completed this by inserting the original video into the bottom right of the frame and then matching our shots with the shots in the original video.
3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
The editing in the prelim relates to Vernallis' in regards to cutting to the beat. This is evident in the first part with the close ups of the band which cut to the music. Varnallis also talks about a narrative being created within a piece. A narrative in this video is the history between the singers in the flashback parts.
4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
We used a DSLR camera in order to film our footage, this ensured great detail throughout the video. We only encountered one problem with the camera and this was the inconsistency in focus, some shots were blurry and some looked great, this is something we will remember to think about when we are creating our music video. We also used a computer to complete the editing process of our video. We used the programme Adobe Premiere Pro to edit our video, this is a great programme as it allows you to have your footage in your workspace while you're editing so it is easy to drop clips into the video.
5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
Thing we had to take into account when planning was the costumes, we all found clothing which was pretty similar to that in the video. We also bought a blow up doll to play Zain in our video in our planning stages this was for a humorous effect as it was a metaphor for Zain no longer being in the group. When shooting we had to take into account the lighting, this was because we were filming outside while it was sunny with some clouds. Some of the shots were quite dark but we tried to overcome this with the editing.
6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
I believe that our music video copy was extremely successful, all of our transitions in the editing process were perfect and our footage was extremely accurate. To improve the video i would use some more accurate locations, for example we were supposed to use a bedroom for one of the shots but had to make do with a table and some green sheets. I would also try and improve the video by improving the focus of the video. I would also think about the sunlight more when filming to try and get a better video.
7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?
From this task i have learned a lot about transitions in a music video from an editing perspective. I understand that cuts in time with the beats are very important. Another thing that i have learned is the shire amount of footage we will need to collect. It took us three days to collect 30 seconds worth of film for our prelim task therefore for our actual music video we will have to take this into account.
8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
I feel like filming a music video is a lot more relaxed then making a film opening as footage is going to be chopped and changed and there will be a lot less straight cuts. With my film opening Cohen we used a variety of long wide sweeping shots however, this prelim task used a variety of short shots.
9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?
As a group member i feel that my strengths are in directing and in editing. I have developed a lot of skills to do with editing after creating a variety of videos using Adobe Premiere Pro. I also filmed my film opening last year which required a lot of directing and i was very proud of our finished product last year. One of my weaknesses as a group member is that i am very possessive over my ideas and don't like it when my group members try to alter them. However, this is something i am improving on.
10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?
I believe the Wonderwall video was very successful. This is because the detail they went into in there filming process was brilliant. An example of that is the shot of Chirs' face in the reflection of a mirror.

Carol Vernallis
Below is a list of features which were theorized by Carol Vernallis.
As you can see in the video below by B.O.B, all of the above features are found in this music video. For example there are parts of a story where he is taking the women he loves around the world, there are jump cuts when the women is walking down the path at the beginning of the video. Another feature which is included in this theory is the quick zoom in the camera in the 26th second of the video, which is an unusual technique if found anywhere else. A sense of diegesis is created in this video where people have all the time in the world to travel and be in love. The video acts as a fantasy which makes it appealing to his audience.
- Narrative- Either has a story, or bits of a story or none after.
- Editing- Jump cuts, Breaks of the 180 degree rule, cutting with the beat, Juxtaposed frames and graphic matches.
- Camera Movements and framing- Lots of different and unusual frames and movements.
- Diegesis- Create a world in there video's.

Music Video Genre's (Performance, Narrative, Concept)
In this lesson we looked at Music Videos from through the ages looking at the first ever music video which was "Video killed the radio star" by Buggles and going all the way through the the video for "Telephone" by Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
Coldplay- Up and Up
This is a concept music video. The video consists of abstract sequences of different cultures and moments from history curated together in an artistic way to portray the world's quest to become a better place, the lyrics "We're gonna get it, get it together somehow" mirror the iconography of this video.
Ed Sheeran- A Team
This is a a narrative music video. This song is based on the narrative of a young women who has been forced into prostitution to aid her drug addiction. The video matches this story and follows her story throughout one night.
Catfish and the Bottlemen- Soundcheck
This is a performance music video. This is a typical low budget music video which is typical of a band who is still 'finding there feet' and making a name for themselves. This is also typical of a heavy rock band. The video is quite dark and moody and displays the band members playing together in a dark space.
We concluded that there are three main types of music videos...
-Performance
-Narrative
-Concept
