Andrew Goodwin

In this lesson we looked at the theorist Goodwin who said that there are 6 things which music videos look to do. They are as follow's.

1.  The visuals, Lyrics and Music either relate to each other or are contrapuntal.

This song's video matches the song really well. It is an extremely upbeat and fun song and the video reflects this through the use of bright colors and jokes throughout.

2. Thought beats- cuts where there are beats

This video is a good example of thought beats as there are lots of cuts on the beats throughout the whole video.

3. Genre Related style and iconography present. Mise En Scene

Bring Me The Horizon are an Alternative Metal Rock band. Metal rock is quite a dark genre. The band represents themselves as a metal band by using dark Mise En Scene such as clothing and staging.

4. Multiple Close ups of artists.

Here is an example of three closeups from the music video for Shut Up and Dance.

5. Sex

As you can see in this video of Madonnas song Hung up there is a lot of sexual images. Madonna has been known for having videos like this and become a sex symbol over the decades. People use sex in there videos to attract a male audience, which is extremely depressing as technique depicts that all men want is sex.

6. Intertexual references to other media texts may be present.

An example of this is See You Again by Charlie Puth which is on the soundtrack to Furious 7. The video was recorded in the same location as the film and there are also cars from the film in the video.

What Music Means to me

 Jack Johnson- Upside Down

Upside down was the single released with the film Curious George in 2006. I didn't see the film but for some reason i had the CD. I remember uploading it to my brothers 2GB Ipod Nano and listening to it everywhere i went. I have always loved guitar music. I remember singing along to it in my car with my earphones on and then my parents looked at me funnily because i was very embarrassed to sing anywhere for some reason.

 Ed Sheeran- The A Team

I got the Album + for my 10th birthday and listened to it non-stop for at least 6 months and i still listen to it now on occasion. Ed Sheeran is probably my favorite musician of all time, again i have always loved guitar and I got this album at the same time as i got my first guitar. The song was also the first one i learned on guitar. I feel like Ed has influenced alot of my own compositions also in terms of style.

Coldplay- Up&Up

I have had a more recent love of Coldplay over the last year or so. Coldplay have a more political message to some of there songs and reflect peace and harmony in there music. This is found in the song UP&UP, with the lyrics "we're going to get it, get it together somehow" which i see as saying were going to find world peace one day, which i really respect. It is nice to see a mainstream act in 2016 that aren't completely wrapped up in themselves. The video is what first attracted me to the song as it is a true work of art!
